Meet James

James Plagmann, Architect + LEED AP is an award-winning, published architect, author and photographer. He is the founder of HumaNature Architecture, LLC in Boulder, Colorado. Through HNA, James provides the full scope of architectural design and consulting services with expertise in sustainable design and building information modeling. James has been practicing sustainable design for nearly 20 years, including 2 ½ years at ENSAR Group, Inc., in Boulder, Colorado (now part of the Rocky Mountain Institute). James specializes in “full spectrum” green design, including sustainable site design, water- energy- and resource-efficiency, healthy, non-toxic materials, daylighting, and indoor environmental quality. Also James has been using Autodesk Revit Building Information Modeling software since 2002, and has been performing computer based energy modeling since 1997. James’ projects include a wide range of building types, from single family custom homes and additions to multi-family affordable housing, hospitals, university buildings, office buildings, non-profits, restaurants and retail. In addition, James incorporates more esoteric design principles such as Sacred Geometry into his work, to further connect people with the greater environment and to honor the design motifs of Nature.

Here’s what clients are saying. . .

We found Mr. Plagmann easy to work with in all aspects of the process and found his knowledge of various suppliers and products very helpful.  We heartily recommend him.

Cindy and Ralph Wells South Fork, Colorado

We are huge fans of James Plagmann’s skills as an architect.  Even more importantly, however, we are impressed with the integrity that he exhibited in all phases of his contact with us.  We highly recommend James for any project but especially any requiring creativity and the accomplishment of intrinsic values through  appropriate design.

I LOVE my house! I’m not leaving it, until they drag me away! Thank you, James!

Sharon Hines Homeowner

Mr. Plagmann took all of the ideas we had in our heads and all of the drawings we had played with before we met him, and turned it all into a jaw-dropping, gorgeous home.  And he did it all quickly and efficiently, with a smile on his face and a pleasant nature, for a reasonable cost.  Everything that is important to us has been incorporated: functional flow form room to room, view and direct light for every room, easy access to the outdorrs, and most importantly, passive solar design.  All without sacrificing comfort.

Many thanks for the consistent effort you put in to get our drawings in under our deadline.  I honestly doubt we would have made it with out you!

"It's all about relationships." This is a phrase that I have found myself saying over and over regarding many aspects of not only design, but also about business and life in general. And the name HumaNature Architecture is the first illustration of that axiom. Good interpersonal relationships are absolutely critical to a successful project, whether they be the relationship between the owner and architect, architect and contractor, or any of the myriad others that are involved on even a small project.
In Nature, there exist mathematical patterns, or relationships that define the forms of everything from the atomic composition of elements, to the shape of flowers, fruits and seashells, the proportions of the human body, the relationships of musical notes, and even the positions and movements of the planets. Artists and architects have, for centuries, used these proportions in their creative endeavors, and HumaNature Architecture is founded upon the belief that buildings designed using these relationships are more resonant with Nature and therefore, more peaceful and harmonious for their Human occupants. So, as with Humans, in Nature, “It’s All About Relationships.”

Cost Control through Integrated Design

By employing integrated project delivery strategies, in which the owner, design and construction teams are represented from the outset, optimization of materials and systems can result, saving time and money. In addition, trade-offs can be made, allowing for higher quality elements in exchange for savings elsewhere. Thus, the initial cost can be the same or less, and the long-term cost is almost always less because of energy and material savings. It is usually the case that a little additional think-time spent upfront pays dividends later.

Full Scope Architectural Services

Including code analysis, space planning, building design, 3D CAD modeling/ drafting, perspective renderings, solar/shading studies, specifications, coordination with contractors, and construction observation.
